The Evolution of MRI

The Evolution of mri1Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology has come a long way since the technology was first developed in the 1970’s. The MRI was originally designed as a way to view the insides of a body through the use of magnetic imaging. However, that is not the case now.

MRI Capabilities

Over the years, the uses for MRI have continued to evolve, and it’s now one of the most diverse procedures available. Fortunately, the MRI has been able to expand and now includes a variety of helpful diagnostic aids. MRI’s have evolved and are used to help diagnose a wide variety of medical conditions, including:

  • Abnormalities of the brain/spinal cord
  • Injuries and abnormalities of the joints
  • Liver and abdominal diseases
  • Uterine abnormalities
  • Heart problems
  • Tumors and cysts
  • Abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord

MRI & Breast Cancer Detection

One of the more interesting aspects of the MRI evolution has been its usefulness in breast cancer screening. In recent years, there have been several studies about the effectiveness of MRI scans in early detection of breast cancer, and many of them have found that MRI scans have been useful in detecting small malignancies that would otherwise be missed during a traditional mammogram.

Although MRI’s can sometimes be costly and aren’t recommended as a go-to procedure, they have been proven to play a crucial role in early detection for women who have an increased breast cancer risk.

MRI technology will continue to evolve and assist with the detection and of numerous diseases. This could lead to new cures and improved treatments for chronic illnesses. We look forward to learning how the MRI with further advances the field of medicine in the future. At Open MRI of Pueblo, we’re excited to be a part of a field that is able to provide these services to the public. If you are in need of an MRI you can request an appointment with us online today!
