6 Things To Day Dream About During Your MRI

Add heading (1)For veterans and firs-timers alike, MRI’s can be boring. Whether you suffer from claustrophobia or boredom, finding ways to pass the time while in a noisy MRI scanner is easier said than done. If you are looking for ways to keep your mind preoccupied during your scan, we’ve got you covered with a few things to day dream about.

  1. Think about a treat

Since there is no formal pre procedure rules for MRI’s we always encourage our patients to treat themselves after their appointment. Whether it’s going out to eat or taking a shopping break. Think of what you’ll treat yourself with after your appointment.

  1. Make a to-do list

Strapped on time? Make a grocery list, a to-do list, or a gift list in your head while you are getting an MRI. It’s multitasking at it’s finest.

  1. Picture yourself at your favorite concert

Since we let you bring your own music to your appointment, jam out like no other while getting your MRI. Visualize yourself on stage, or in the crowd, either way it shouldn’t bother the MRI technicians even if you sing a little!

  1. Think about how much money you’re saving

Since we use SaveOn medical to give you the best prices on MRI’s we are saving you hundreds of dollars. If that isn’t something to dream about I don’t know what is!

  1. Be at the beach

Because we use open MRI technology you’ll feel so much more comfort than you would if you were in a normal MRI machine. You’ll feel so comfortable that you might mistake our office for a tropical sand beach.

  1. Or take a nap

If all else fails, just lay back and take a nap! We see patients do it all the time and we get it. So just drift off to sleep and we’ll handle the rest.

We hope these tips will help you stay distracted during your MRI scan. Our team at Open MRI of Pueblo is dedicated to making your MRI experience a breeze, so feel free to reach out to us with how we can make you comfortable. Your MRI will be done before you know it!

Debunking scary radiation myths!

Debunking scaryRadiation. Just the word can make people fearful. Over the years radiation has cast a spotlight in medicine forcing patients to be scared of any type of medical procedure with radiation. The effects of radiation have become more daunting over the years ranging from an increase of thyroid cancer, killing mass amount of plants, causing physical deformities, and much more. However, these are the most extreme cases of an exponential amount of radiation exposure.

There are many myths that need to be cleared up concerning radiation, especially because it is a part of your daily life and you may not realize it. Yes, radiation is incredibly harmful at extreme doses, but it is not this huge monster that everyone assumes it to be. All of us at Open MRI of Pueblo decided to debunk some common radiation myths to help clear the air about radiation.

Myth #1: Radiation is always unsafe.

This simply can’t be true considering that radiation is in the air we breathe and the food that we eat. There is naturally occurring radiation and even man made radiation that we are exposed to on a daily basis that goes completely unnoticed because it isn’t harmful. According to Radiation Answers, the average annual dose of radiation exposure per person is 622 mrem which includes the radiation from the air, food, soil, cosmic radiation, and human-made sources. In fact, did you know that flying on an airplane exposes you to anywhere from 2-10 mrem? The yearly average is a completely safe amount and doesn’t cause harm to the human body.

Myth #2: Power plants are dangerous and emit too much radiation.

Due to the extreme effects of nuclear power plant exposure, the media coverage garners a ton of attention and people assume they’re highly dangerous. However, these plants are under strict monitoring and control at all times. In fact, the radiation emission AND fallout from past atomic bomb detonations account for less than one percent of the exposure we receive.

Myth #3: Radiation from power plant leaks is responsible for causing cancer and other health issues.

While many reports have claimed that these radiation disasters have actually increased thyroid cancer in those surrounding the plant, it just isn’t true. However, may people haven’t heard the counter studies because the hype ended with ‘power plant exposure causes cancer’. The United Nations Scientific Committee of the Effects of Atomic Radiation and numerous other health departments investigated the effects of the infamous Three Mile Island incident and discovered that there is no evidence to suggest that there were harmful effects on the environment or the people involved. It sounds hard to believe, but it’s true!

Myth 4: MRIs are bad because you’re exposed to radiation.

Surprisingly, a common misconception is that MRIs use radiation and a patient will be exposed during the scan. This is not true. In fact, there is zero radiation exposure and it is easily confused with CT scans and X-rays which do expose radiation to patients. Many people mistakenly group these medical imaging scans together and assume radiation is a part of each scan. At Open MRI of Pueblo, any concern or worry you have about radiation and fly out of the window because you’ll be radiation free during your MRI.

Radiation doesn’t have to be super scary especially when it comes to your MRI. Now that you know these radiation myths don’t believe them! If you need an MRI schedule your appointment with us at Open MRI of Pueblo today!

4 Benefits Of An Open MRI

4Not many people know this but there are various types of MRI’s! How many may you ask? There are three different types of MRI scans, but in our opinion one reigns supreme above all others. Can you guess what it is? Open MRI of course! Here are 4 benefits of open MRI’s:

Claustrophobia

One of the main perks is that the sides of the machine are open. This allows patients to not feel closed in or trapped within the MRI machine. If you’re someone who is prone to feeling claustrophobic, this is extremely helpful and limits feelings of claustrophobia.

Less Noise

Getting an MRI is usually a noisy process. However, if you’re in an open MRI machine vs a closed MRI machine, there will be a significantly less amount of noise. In fact, closed MRI machines require earbuds to help with the excess noise.

Clearer Image

The wide design of an open MRI allows patients to be positioned in a way that allows for a clearer image. If a patient is positioned closer to center of the magnet, the image is much clearer. In a closed MRI machine, there isn’t as much variability which can limit the patient’s position.

Metallic Objects Interfere less

Many patients have had a previous surgery that left metallic implants in their bodies. These implants can affect the quality of the MRI in a closed machine due to high magnetic fields. Fortunately, open MRI machines have lower magnetic fields which allows these implants to interfere less with the quality of the image.

With all these benefits of an open MRI, why would you get any other type of MRI? At Open MRI of Pueblo, we put the patients first because we care about their comfortability. That’s why we use open MRI technology. If you need an MRI make an appointment with us today by calling (719)-404-0991.
