How To Be Prepared For Your MRI Scan

HOW TO BE PREPAREDWhether you suffer from claustrophobia or are undergoing an MRI for the first time, this diagnostic imaging scan can be intimidating. Whether its the noises or lengthy scan time, we understand that preparing for this exam can be overwhelming for our patients. No need to worry, we’ve got you covered with a list of helpful MRI prep tips.

1. Pre-Procedure

There is no special week of, the night before, or day of procedure for an MRI exam. You’ve made your appointment and we’ve confirmed your time with you. Just remember if you didn’t already pay out-of-pocket online, bring your insurance card with you. Also, try not to wear any jewelry or metal objects as we will ask you to take them off before you are escorted to the exam room. Most importantly, remember there is nothing to be worried about! At Open MRI of Pueblo, we take care of you.

2. Items to bring

As we said before, make sure to bring your insurance card if you didn’t already pay our incredibly low online prices. Bring a copy of identification with you, a playlist for music during the exam, and bring a friend or family member to comfort you during the exam.

3. Items not to bring

Try not to bring any metal, jewelry, or anything else that can disrupt the MRI scan. If you do bring these items it’s no problem we will put them in a safe place for you while you are in the exam room.

4. Day of procedure

Once you arrive at our office we will ask you to fill out some patient paperwork. Next, you will be instructed to change into a hospital gown and take off any metal on your body. Then, you will be told to lie down on the MRI machine and just relax. If you brought a playlist we will play it for you, if you brought a friend to comfort you, you will be allowed to talk to them. Just make sure you lie perfectly still, the MRI will take anywhere between 15 min to an hour to complete.

5. Post Procedure

After the MRI is complete you will be able to change out of your hospital gown and into your normal clothes. Then you will get any belongings back that weren’t allowed in the exam room. Then if you didn’t already make a payment you will be lead to our front desk to show your insurance card. After all of this, you are free to go! We encourage patients to treat themselves after having to stay still for such a prolonged period of time.

We hope these helpful tips will put your mind at ease. Fortunately, MRI’s are painless and non-invasive which means they’ll be over before you know it. If you need to book an MRI appointment, schedule one at our center today!

5 Ways To Be More Awake In The Morning

5 ways to be moreYour alarm goes off, you hit snooze, you wake up thinking it’s 10 minutes later but it’s not. You woke up an hour late, and now your entire morning is off and you’re probably going to be late to work. This is common for most people, tons of people have slept through alarms or hit the snooze button one too many times. This is all because people are REALLY tired, we don’t get enough sleep. Here are some ways to feel more awake in the morning.

1. Wake up and move

Whether this means putting your alarm clock on the other side of the room or getting up and doing a workout. Waking up and then instantly moving is the best way to feel more awake in the early hours of the day. Try making a plan to go on a run or doing a workout class with a friend.

2. Don’t hit the snooze button

This is one of the main culprits of making people go back to sleep in the morning. You hit the snooze button thinking you can get 10 more minutes and then you’re asleep for a few more hours. Make it a point to not hit the snooze button at all and to wake up immediately.

3. Take a cold shower

We know that cold showers aren’t everyone’s first choice when it comes to showering. However, having a steaming hot shower can actually make your body feel more sleepy. Try and incorporate a cold shower in your morning once a week and you’ll be able to feel the difference in your body.

4. Create goals for the day

By setting some goals for your day you will be more prone to wake up in the morning to try and achieve them! Set goals the night before and put them right next to your bed so that they are one of the first things you see when you wake up.

5. Keep trying

Train yourself to be more awake in the morning! Try and set your alarm 10 minutes earlier each week. This will train your body to get up and will help you sleep cycle.

Another way to get up in the morning? Scheduling an MRI appointment with Open MRI of Pueblo. This will give you the excitement to take on the day and get to your appointment on time. Make an appointment with us today!

Should My Child Get An MRI?

Should my childA parent’s number one concern is always their child’s well being. A common question we hear from parents when their child is getting an MRI is, “Is it safe?” As parents, it’s important to always ensure you’re never putting your child in harm’s way, especially if it is simply due to a lack of knowledge. We decided to break it down and explain anything you should know when your child is about to get an MRI.

Is it safe?

MRIS are not suitable for everyone, this includes children. For example, metal is a complete no-go when undergoing an MRI which leaves out anyone that has metal in their body. Radiologists have to ensure that the MRI will be safe for your child before they undergo the scan. According to UCHL, the parent will receive a safety questionnaire to ensure that the MRI is suitable for your child. Currently, there are no known risks of having an MRI if you meet the safety criteria unless you undergo numerous scans which increase radiation exposure.

Will my child need sedation?

Many times, children are uncomfortable with undergoing an MRI scan because it is hard to sit still for a long period of time. Many places will offer the option of sedation which helps children feel relaxed and stay still during the scan. It is usually recommended for children who can’t stay still to have an MRI under sedation in order to complete an effective scan since movement during the procedure will affect the image’s clarity.

Is sedation dangerous?

As with the MRI, you will be instructed to fill out a safety form which covers your child’s medical history. This helps the center eliminate any potential risks based off of their medical history. It is extremely rare for anyone to experience serious complications such as respiratory distress or hypertension due to sedation. Your doctor will make an informed decision before referring your child to ensure that there are no present risks.

It can be scary for your child to have to go to the doctor, especially when undergoing an MRI. We’re here to answer any of your questions to soothe any concerns you may have. We understand that you may want to know any potential risks, alternatives, etc., before allowing your child to receive medical attention. Contact us if you have any further questions, we would love to help!

Radiology Roundup: What’s The Best Procedure In Radiology?

Radiology Roundup-

Radiology boasts a plethora of procedures ranging from ultrasounds, CT scans, x-rays, mammograms, and more. It’s a bit of a battle, between all of these procedures, to be crowned the best procedure in radiology. Most radiology procedures are different but at Open MRI of Pueblo we agree that only one procedure should be king of radiology. The MRI of course!

Why is an MRI the best procedure in radiology?

MRI’s are used to take in depth looks into the human body. Using strong magnetic fields, MRI’s produce a picture of the body that can show the muscle tissue and bones in the body. How cool is it that?!

I’m not convinced yet, why is an MRI the best?

Well there are three types of MRI’s: wide, closed, and open MRI. The best type of MRI is definitely the open MRI because it increases patient comfort, provides shorter scan times, and can accommodate diverse patient height and weight. An open MRI also allows the patient to bring a friend or family member to accompany them while the scan is taking place. So you can get an MRI and talk with your loved one’s at the same time! What can be better than that?

So where’s the best place to get an Open MRI?

Well in our opinion, Open MRI of Pueblo is the best place to get an open MRI in the state. They have a friendly staff, experienced radiologists, and affordable prices for out-of-pocket patients. They are also ACR accredited, the highest honor an imaging center can receive, and puts patient comfort as it’s top priority.

So what are you waiting for? Make an appointment for the best procedure in radiology at the best place to get an MRI. Call (719) 404-0991 to make an appointment or talk to one of our staff members about any questions you may have!

Parent Guide: How to increase your child’s bone health

Parents guide-

As a parent, you worry about your child. It’s just parental instinct. So you’re obviously concerned with the health of your child, especially with their bone health. Children aged 2-8 need proper nutrients for their bone health. If kids don’t develop correctly, it can affect them for the rest of their life. Here’s how to increase your child’s bone health now:

Work those bones

PCRM stated it perfectly, exercise gives bones a reason to live. When your child is putting their bones to work, they are forcing their bones to grow stronger and denser. This is one of the most influential ways to promote bone health in your child. Kids are a ball of energy, so this tip won’t take much adjusting. Simply make sure you’re getting them outside to run around, throw the football, play tag, etc. It will be more than putting a smile on their face.

Eat Your Fruits and Veggies

Research has shown that diets high in fruits and vegetables promote increased bone health. Numerous vitamins are hidden within these healthy treats, such as vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, magnesium, etc.

  • Vitamin C – responsible for boosting the production of collagen, the connective tissue that minerals cling to when the bone is formed
  • Vitamin K – responsible for stimulating bone formation
  • Potassium – responsible for increasing the rate of bone building while decreasing the loss of calcium
  • Magnesium – responsible for increasing bone strength, similar to calcium

Cut Out the Salt

It’s commonly understood that too much salt is a huge no-no. It can lead to a variety of negative health issues, but it can specifically steal your child’s calcium. Excess salt latches onto the calcium in your body, so wherever the salt goes, your calcium follows. Your kidney filters salt by passing it through your urine, which means your calcium is also leaving your body. If you focus on decreasing your child’s sodium intake by avoiding high sodium food options, you will eliminate the loss of calcium and bone breakdown.

With these tips, you’ll be able to relax and know that your child’s bone health is increasing. If you’re still concerned, they may need an MRI. If you need to book an appointment for an MRI, choose Open MRI of Pueblo. We utilize open MRI technology so that you can be in the procedure room with your child. How To Thank Your Doctor

How to (1)This week holds a holiday that means a lot to the medical field. National Doctor’s Day of course! National Doctor’s Day is a day to celebrate and appreciate doctors all around the country. Doctors do so much for the individual patient, communities, and the world as a whole. If it weren’t for doctors we would all be dead. With such a prominent position in the community, it can be hard to know how to show your thanks. Here are a couple ways how you can thank your doctor.

  1. A thank you note

If you’ve been seeing a doctor for a long time now make sure to send a thank you note. It’s a courtesy that tons of people don’t take advantage of. Thank you notes have been overlooked in recent years, and I’m positive that your doctor will appreciate it.

  1. A letter

A nice heartfelt letter to your doctor would be more than appropriate especially if you have been with the same doctor for quite some time. Also, if you went through any traumatic disease, or had a really bad injury where you were constantly seeing the same doctor. Writing a letter expressing how much you appreciate them helping you through this stressful time in your life.

  1. A gift

Some sort of small token of appreciation would show our doctor that you really care that they are there for you. Something small such as a gift card, a bouquet of flowers, or something you know about them personally like a round of golf. There’s no need to get your doctor anything huge, they don’t practice medicine for the gifts they do it to help patients.

Now that you know how to properly thank your doctor, make sure to make an appointment with Open MRI of Pueblo. We have the best radiologists, an ACR accredited facility, and the lowest prices in the area. Call to make an appointment for an MRI today at (719) 404-0991.

4 Benefits Of An Open MRI

4Not many people know this but there are various types of MRI’s! How many may you ask? There are three different types of MRI scans, but in our opinion one reigns supreme above all others. Can you guess what it is? Open MRI of course! Here are 4 benefits of open MRI’s:

Claustrophobia

One of the main perks is that the sides of the machine are open. This allows patients to not feel closed in or trapped within the MRI machine. If you’re someone who is prone to feeling claustrophobic, this is extremely helpful and limits feelings of claustrophobia.

Less Noise

Getting an MRI is usually a noisy process. However, if you’re in an open MRI machine vs a closed MRI machine, there will be a significantly less amount of noise. In fact, closed MRI machines require earbuds to help with the excess noise.

Clearer Image

The wide design of an open MRI allows patients to be positioned in a way that allows for a clearer image. If a patient is positioned closer to center of the magnet, the image is much clearer. In a closed MRI machine, there isn’t as much variability which can limit the patient’s position.

Metallic Objects Interfere less

Many patients have had a previous surgery that left metallic implants in their bodies. These implants can affect the quality of the MRI in a closed machine due to high magnetic fields. Fortunately, open MRI machines have lower magnetic fields which allows these implants to interfere less with the quality of the image.

With all these benefits of an open MRI, why would you get any other type of MRI? At Open MRI of Pueblo, we put the patients first because we care about their comfortability. That’s why we use open MRI technology. If you need an MRI make an appointment with us today by calling (719)-404-0991.
