Watch Out for West Nile

Because of the recent rain, mosquitoes have been thriving this season.

While that’s always annoying, it’s not dangerous, as Pueblo County mosquitoes have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

So far, no humans have reported contracting the virus, but it’s important to stay aware of your body.

Development can occur anywhere between 5 and 14 days after being bitten. It can happen to anyone. Symptoms include:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Meningitis
  • Encephalitis

Prevention strategies include:

  • Draining standing water
  • Avoid the outdoors at dusk and dawn
  • Use mosquito repellent with DEET
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts, pants, and shoes
